Q1. How and when did you start your Entrepreneur Journey to serve into Wedding industry? What did inspire you to start your own business?

Following a typical Indian parent’s goal, being a state rank holder, I studied to be a Computer engineer from Mumbai and subsequently worked as an analyst with a leading private sector bank for 3 years. The childhood passion for drawing, painting and designing was left far behind in the mindless pursuit of a corporate career. In early 2007, I finally decided to quit the cushy corporate job and follow my passion in the field of fashion and designing. When I was selected for a postgraduate program in Apparel designing at the prestigious Institute in Ahmedabad, there was no looking back.

After completing the course, I worked with a couple of reputed department store chains as a designer for a brief period before starting my eponymous brand in 2011. The idea was to give creative freedom to my own vision and to use the services of talented karigars and bring the magic of handmade luxury into the clothes.

Q2. Kindly describe more about your business, your role, products/services.

The brand Priti Sahni is a 10 year young Indian ethnic wear brand in the accessible Luxury domain, specialising in Bespoke Bridal and Festive wear. We aim to develop a community of women celebrating the Indian craft and culture with an open heart. We strive to support sustainable fashion by incorporating local art and thereby promoting artisanal culture, by adhering to slow fashion, sourcing local raw material and hand-crafting high quality products that are close to our hearts.

Q3. Please share about unique feature/specialty/USP of your Product/Service.

The label’s minimalist yet fashion-forward style brings about a beautiful blend of traditional crafts and contemporary designs for modern Indian women who are proud of their roots. We offer fully customised experience to our clients through our own website as well as a studio based out of Mumbai.

As a brand philosophy, I believe in timeless classics and creating evergreen outfits that clients can wear again and again, even passing it to the next generation as a legacy. Even the bridal outfits are designed in such a way that it can be used later with a fun mix-and-match, adding a dash of your personality and basically playing your own stylist!

Q4. How would you explain the importance of your role into a Wedding?

The bridal outfit is not just an outfit, it is a dream, an emotion and we firmly believe in it. I feel blessed to have a job to help the brides to bring their dream outfit into reality. As a team, we are constantly working to ensure every minute thing in the outfit is designed with utmost perfection and lots of love. Lastly, we are a designer brand for the entire family and it is joyful to design outfits of family members of the bride and groom.

Q5. What are the most common challenges you face at the wedding you are handling?

Being a bridal designer and working with brides more often than not, the most common challenge is to be able to craft their dream bridal outfit into reality. The digital trend has picked up where a lot of shopping is now happening virtually so the challenge always is to give a personalized experience to our clients and offer them customization in colours, styles, silhouettes and surface ornamentation.

Q6. How do you deal with these challenges?

Clear communication is the key to successfully navigate through a challenging situation. Even for our long distance brides, we make sure that we are on the same page before starting the work. We share all possible colour, fabric and embroidery swatches which enables them to visualize their outfit even before it's made. We also share progress on their outfits through photos/ videos and are always accessible to clear any doubt, if required.

Q7. Could you share one of your most unique creation/experience for/of a wedding?

Making each bridal outfit is an emotional journey for me and my team as it is a big responsibility on us to design for the most important day of someone very special.

One experience that I cannot forget is to design a bridal lehenga for a lovely bride from the USA. It was an amazing journey for me personally when we started working on her outfit. It was a time when the bridal lehengas were made in pinks, reds and other bright colours, and this bride told me that she wanted a subtle ivory look.

We discussed at length and decided on the kind of styling, fabrics and embroidery elements that can be used to make it look like a timeless bridal outfit. It was done in intricate pearl and zardosi handwork all over and the end result was fabulous and beyond beautiful!

Q8. What type of collaborations would you like to explore in future?

We are looking forward to collaborate with like minded people in different aspects of wedding and fashion/ styling; like wedding planners, photographers, make-up artists to social media influencers and celebrity stylists.

Q9. What is your vision for next five years?

We want to see our brand soar higher and become the most coveted wedding and festive wear brand. Sustainability will continue to remain our key driving force for years to come and we want to be recognized amongst the most sustainable brands worldwide. Our ambition is to promote and revive the craft from all parts of our country and ensure that the talented karigars and craftsmen have a sustainable future.

Q10. What would you advise new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in the business?

My advice to new entrepreneurs would be to start small and understand the whole dynamics of the business. Fashion is a monetary intensive business and the operational costs are very high, so starting on a relatively smaller level will give you more bandwidth to sustain yourself till you find your foothold in the industry. As a creative person, find your niche, identify the client segment and use social media for brand awareness. Have faith in yourself and give your best!
